Authorities warn public against flood, landslides

By Edna A. Bagadiong

VIRAC, Catanduanes, July 5 (PIA) -- The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) recently warned the public against possible flash floods and landslides that might occur due to heavy rains.

According to PDRRMO headed by Engr. Nieva Santelices, the continuous downpour since yesterday is due to the Low Pressure Area (LPA) inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) which is affecting the Bicol Region.

The agency added that although there is a slim chance that the LPA could become a typhoon, it reminded the citizens to be alert always for possible flashfloods and landslides particularly those leaving in low-lying areas and near the mountain slopes.

Last week, the province was placed under Signal No. 2 due to Typhoon Gorio which caused the cancellation of flights and stranding almost 300 passengers of ferries travelling from Tabaco to Virac and vice versa.

As of Thursday (June 4) morning, the LPA was located 170 kilometers west of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro according the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa). (MAL/EAB/PIA5-Catanduanes)
