Lenten break in Camarines Sur, generally peaceful

NAGA CITY, April 12 (PIA) - Aside from a minor vehicular accident registered by the Philippine National Police (PNP) provincial office, there were no other big and alarming crimes that occurred during the observance of the Lenten Season in this province.

This was disclosed in an interview by Police Chief Inspector Benjie EspaƱa, newly designated PNP Community Relations Officer at Camarines Sur Police Provincial Office here.

On March 28, Maundy Thursday, a vehicle traversing the Sipocot road in Camarines Sur turned turtle and injured hurt its five passengers. The family of Joseph Christopher Uy was spared from serious harm when volunteers from the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), Kabalikat Civicom group and other concerned citizens came to their rescue. The family was from Bacoor, Cavite and was in Bicol for Visita Iglesia.

On Easter Sunday, a shooting incident was lodged at the blotter of Calabanga Municipal Police Station. The victim, a certain Marvin Delos Reyes y Laxamana, 30 years old from Barangay Bonot, Sta. Rosa this town was gunned down by still unidentified assailant.

4th District Congressional Candidate Aga Muhlach’s twin-engine speed boat was also reported on fire after his crew started its engine. Investigation of PNP Caramoan, revealed that the gas leak and defective electrical wirings were the reasons for the fire. No one was seriously hurt except for the minor burns sustained by Muhlach’s crew.

Aside from these incidents, the Lenten break was declared generally peaceful with the help of various government agencies, private institutions and civic organizations manning the strategic public areas, specifically malls, department stores, convergence areas and pilgrim sites.

In Calabanga, Camarines Sur, the presence of 100 police men from Camp Simeon Ola served as a deterrent to pickpockets who usually mingle with Hinulid devotees especially during Good Friday.

The team formed part of the augmentation force deployed in various parts of the province to ensure the safety of the pilgrims and other visitors. The Amang Hinulid is being visited by close to half a million devotees every year to personally offer their petitions and wishes to the miraculous image.
