National highways are not palay solar dryers, parking areas – DPWH

by Marlon A. Loterte

LEGAZPI CITY, April 12 (PIA) -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regional office here has reminded farmers and rice traders not to use the national highways as dryers for palay or corn to avoid road accidents.

DPWH-V regional director Danilo Dequito said Sec. Rogelio Singson has directed all regional and district offices of the agency across the country to monitor and make sure that all national highways should be free from any barriers to facilitate traffic and ensure safety of motorists.

The agency, according to Dequito, has already coordinated with the local governments with jurisdiction over areas with major highways urging the same to strictly enforce the “no parking” regulation or encroachments on national roads, especially at the widened portion

“The agency is also requesting the Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel and the barangay officials and village police to help us out on this concern,” he said.

DPWH, according to the regional director, has widened the national highways to facilitate smoother flow of traffic especially in major arterials roads and not to be used as solar dyers for palay or corn.

DPWH has widened and improved the major highways in the country, including Manila South Road or Daang Maharlika going to Bicol and other national arterial roads in the country.

Dequito said that the agency observed that farmers taking advantage of the good weather are drying up their palay or corn along the national highways and cordoning off road sections that were widened.

“Farmers even put stones and barriers along the national highways to protect their palay from being overrun by vehicles. The presence of big stones or boulders poses danger to motorists,” he noted.

DPWH meanwhile has also noted that tricycles and motorcycles are using the center lanes of these widened national roads and this hampers smoother flow of traffic or poses danger to motorists, particularly at night
time.

“We are the also urging the local governments to help put order along the national roads, particularly in poblaciones or market areas, as motorists encounterheavy traffic on the approaches of these market areas or town centers because of the presence of tricycle terminals or parking areas encroaching on national roads,” he said.
