LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 8 (PIA) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) Bicol regional office has proven to be an unstoppable force in thwarting illegal activities, on land and at sea, evident this time with the success of a recent seaborne police operations against illegal fishing in Sorsogon, which resulted in the arrest of 15 fishermen.
Around 11:00 pm last September 4, the said seaborne operation was conducted along the territorial waters of Barangay Biton in Magallanes, Sorsogon, with the combined forces of the PNP and the Bantay-Dagat of Magallanes led by Mayor Augusto Manuel Ragragio. The raid nabbed fifteen fishermen, which were all identified to be residents of Bulan, Sorsogon.
The fishermen, one of whom is still a minor, were caught in the act of illegally catching fish with the use of ring nets (an active fishing gear locally known as “kubkob”), which is in violation of sections 86 and 95 of Republic Act 10654 or “An Act to Prevent, Deter, and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing”. After the operation, the fishermen were taken to Magallanes police headquarters for booking and for disposition of their fishing paraphernalia.
The abovementioned raid in Sorsorgon is one of many police ops of the intensified anti-illegal fishing campaign, as ordered by PNP Bicol regional director CSupt. Ramon Buenafe. As directed by Buenafe, all provincial directors are to continuously monitor and conduct aggressive anti-illegal fishing operations within their areas of responsibilities.
Buenafe ordered a strengthened drive against illegal fishing by having the region’s police force intercept all vessels being used in illegal fishing activities, and apprehend all those engaging in unlawful fishing.
From January 1 to August 22 of this year, PNP-Bicol has conducted a total of 102 legitimate anti-illegal fishing operations from the provinces of the Bicol region. As of last month, these operations have yielded a total of 449 arrests and 82 cases were filed.
Of the 102 police operations, two are from Albay, seven from Camarines Norte, 17 from Camarines Sur, 47 are from Sorsogon, and Masbate had 29 police ops. During the said operations, the authorities also intercepted 91 fishing vessels, 17 compressors and 736 kilograms of assorted fishes were confiscated.
With the success the campaign has been garnering, Buenafe lauded all the local police for their relentless efforts against illegal fishing on their jurisdictions.
He also ordered all police stations to always adhere to the mandate of protecting the marine resources from any form of illegal fishing activity through strict enforcement of the Republic Act 8550, otherwise known as “The Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998” and all other city and municipal ordinances on protecting the marine life.
