Bayani Challenge in Naga City kicks off today

By: Ana-Liza S. Macatangay

NAGA CITY, May 6 (PIA) --- Evidencing that the sense of volunteerism is still very much alive among the Naguenos, the city government of Naga, under the stewardship of Mayor John G. Bongat led today the early start of the 5-day “Barangay Walang Iwanan: Bayani Challenge” together with representatives coming from various government institutions, barangay officials and GAWAD Kalinga officials.

All twenty-seven barangays participated in the clean-up drive as an opening salvo for the event to be followed by different barangay activities in the upcoming days where simultaneous Bayani Challenges activities will be conducted.

Actively supporting this endeavor is the Gawad Kalinga (GK) who believes in the essence of “Bayanihan” or volunteerism as an important part of the nation’s journey to end indigence. GK is a Philippine-based movement that aims to end poverty for 5 million families, by first restoring the dignity of the poor – and one way to materialize this is by giving them decent homes for their shelter.

As such, one of the activities lined up for the duration of the challenge is the building of houses in Barangay Balatas. This morning, there will also be a ground-breaking of the Ginhawang Nagueno GK Village and the city wide cleaning involving more or less 25,000 volunteers. There will also be a city-wide feeding of kids slated this afternoon.

“We, at the local government of Naga, are happy that we are united in this endeavor more so that volunteerism is the main objective of this event.  We will help so that others will prosper.  I hope that the following day, starting today, we will work and exhaust ourselves, and be happy for the betterment of our society, particularly the 3rd District of Camarines Sur,” Bongat stated as he addressed all the volunteers who responded to the call for Bayanihan Challenge.

Bayani Challenge 2015 Movement Team Leader Mark Sebastian said that the presence of volunteers reiterates the fact that the hope of the country is in the heart of every one, that the hope of the Philippines is not only in the government, not only for those persons in the position, but in everyone that need to care and sacrifice for the love of others.

“We are here to end poverty.  We are here because we want to tell the whole Naga City and the country, together with all other volunteers now simultaneously doing Bayani Challenge in Leyte, Mindanao and the North, that we want to end poverty,” Sebastian added.

Sebastian also announced the groundbreaking on Friday and the relocation of 50 families living at the garbage dumpsite in Barangay Balatas.  The GK team is also scheduled to visit the 27 barangays to help poor families and feed 5,000 children who are hungry, including the clean-up of almost 80 streets within the city.
