LEGAZPI CITY, May 6 (PIA) -- Some 52 workers in Camarines Norte need not to rent devices they need in work that costs them a portion of their earning after the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Bicol regional office has provided them with P347,077 worth of tools and equipment.
These workers of Barangay Anahaw, Camarines Norte are independent workers who have to rent tools and equipment for their work.
Allan Parco, a carpenter, for instance, said he had to rent an electric drill for PHP150 and as a result he only got PHP200 per day for his take-home pay.
Alfred Logno said he had to partner with another technician who had a complete set of tools once he was offered a job order and he earned just a percentage share.
Gemma Villagomez, who has venture in food preparation, said that she had to settle for her few cooking equipment for her growing products.
Faced with these problems, Parco, Logno, Villagomez and the 49 other workers in their village sought the help of the barangay council which looked for a project sponsor that can provide livelihood assistance to its constituents.
It found the answer in the DOLE Bicol regional office, which make the village an accredited co-partner and approved a livelihood fund assistance of PHP347,077 through Barangay Chairman Medel Pornicula.
Now with the carpentry, electrical tools, welding machine, beauty care kits, sewing machines, cooking equipment and supplies that they now own, the workers are now assured that their gross income from their work will be intact.
“When we provide this assistance, we do not want you to depend on the government, but we help you become self-employed and later become entrepreneurs. So altogether, we will help reduce poverty,” DOLE project facilitator Jane L. Rolda said.
And as DOLE motto says, Rolda claimed, “More than Jobs, it’s Decent Jobs”. (MAL/DOLE5/PIA5)

SORSOGON CITY, May 7 (PIA) – The Department of Tourism (DOT) Bicol Regional Office has advised local government officials and other stakeholders to suspend all tourism related activities within the 4-km radius permanent danger zone (PDZ) down slopes of Bulusan volcano after Phivolcs recently hoisted Alert Level 1 due to the volcano's abnormal activities.
DOT Bicol Regional Director Maria O. Ravanilla said the issuance of the travel advisory conforms with the directives of Phivolcs to suspend any human activity in the 4-km PDZ to ensure the safety of tourists from the threats of eruption of Bulusan volcano.
“We have to remind local government officials and the public that all tourism related activities within the 4-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) are temporarily suspended until such time that the Phivolcs lowers the alert level status to zero and issue an advisory to the public and concerned government instrumentalities that entry to the 4-km radius PDZ will be allowed anew,” Ravanila said.
The advisory was in reference to the Bulusan Volcano Bulletin issued on May 7, 2015 at 8:00AM by the Philippine Institute of Volcano and Seismology (Phivolcs) raising Bulusan Volcano’s status from Alert Level 0 (normal) to Alert Level 1 (abnormal) which correspondingly prohibits the entry of tourist/s to the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.
“We are also informing the public that Bulusan Lake is considered safe for the public to visit being outside of the 4-km radius PDZ. Eco-adventure activities such as kayaking, canoeing, boating and trekking within the lake’s perimeter can be enjoyed by tourists visiting this eco-tourism area within the Bulusan Volcano Natural Park (BVNP),” the advisory further stated.
Meanwhile, during the emergency meeting conducted by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Bulusan Volcano Risk Assessment and Preparation, LGUs concerned reported that tourism activities in Mt. Bulusan, Orok Cold Spring and Anog Cold Spring Resorts have been terminated already since May 2 following the volcano’s ash explosion on May 1, 2015 to avoid untoward incident.
Orok Cold Spring in Casiguran town and Anog Cold Spring in the municipality of Juban are both located within the 4-km PDZ, while it would be hazardous to climb Mt. Bulusan due to possible threat of suffocation and of ejected materials from the volcano. (MAL/BAR-PIA5/Sorsogon)
