VIRAC, Catanduanes, April 29, (PIA)—Vice President Jejomar C. Binay led the awarding of cash assistance from the Alay sa Kawal Foundation, Inc. (ASK) to widows of Army soldiers killed in action in defense of the nation’s freedom.
The widows of five casualties from the 9th Infantry Division received P30,000 each during the awarding ceremony held last April 28 at the base camp of 83rd Infantry Battalion, 9th Infantry Division in Barangay Lictin, San Andres.
In his message, Binay, also chairman of foundation, paid tribute to the soldiers who were killed while performing their duties to the nation.
Also present during the awarding were 901st Brigade deputy commander Col. Generoso L. Bolina, Valenzuela Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian, 83rd IB commander Lt. Col. Zacarias B. Batalla Jr., PNP Provincial Director Adelio Benjamin Castillo, Vice Governor Jose J. Teves, Jr., San Andres Mayor Peter C. Cua and former Gov. Joseph C. Cua.
ASK is the oldest non-governmental organization (NGO) devoted to the welfare of enlisted personnel in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
Founded in 1986 in the aftermath of the Edsa Revolution, ASK was meant as a gesture of thanks to the soldiers who sided with pro-change forces on that historic occasion.
Binay also led a people’s walk in this provncial capital, from the Kemji Resort to the Virac Public Market before paying a “courtesy call” to Governor Araceli B. Wong at the provincial capitol.
He also met with local officials and some senior citizens of Bato, Catanduanes and distributed wheelchairs to seniors and persons with disabilities in various towns of the island.
