Army musters troops for Task Force Sagip in response to typhoon Glenda

LEGAZPI CITY, July 22 (PIA) – The Philippine Army has since placed on alert its disaster response and rescue units (DRRU) all over Bicol as the region braced for typhoon Glenda early last week while the same carried out relief operations to typhoon victims immediately the day after the devastation of the extreme weather system.

Maj. Gen. Yerson Depayso, commanding general of the Army's 9th Infantry Division, told Philippine Information Agency (PIA) in Bicol that the army regional unit in Bicol activated its Task Force Sagip immediately as public storm warning signals were raised in several provinces in the region.

Depayso said  the DRRUs are composed of 660 rescuers from the army’s three infantry brigades, five infantry battalions, and division headquarters based in Camp Elias Angeles in Pili, Camarines Sur.

He added the three infantry brigades are composed of 901st Brigade covering the provinces of Albay and Catanduanes, 902nd Brigade serving the Camarines provinces and 903rd Brigade based in Sorsogon and Masbate, Depayso added.

Army's DRRUs served on 24-hours duty in their respective areas of responsibility commencing on July 14 when PSWS 1 was declared, providing assistance to the municipal, provincial and regional disaster risk reduction and management councils by mustering the troops in preparation for evacuation, search and rescue operations in flood and landslide prone areas, and post disaster relief efforts.

The army also assisted some 350 residents in barangays Sula and Subang in Vinzons town in Camarines Norte in rescue operations and evacuation during the height of the typhoon..

Meanwhile, the Army's 42nd Infantry Battalion together with a national television network launched relief operations in some towns in Camarines provinces over the weekend.

Relief packs were distributed to residents of barangays Benito, Iraya and Salvacion in Buhi town in Camarines Sur last Friday with assistance from the Civil Military Operations (CMO) Battalion. Also in Bato, Camarines Sur, 475 families received relief goods.

The soldiers also joined with other agencies the clean up drive in Naga City as part of its civil military operations. (MAL/JJJP-PIA5)
