LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 3 (PIA) – Excellence should be in our hearts…as we write with a purpose.
This is what Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Director General Jose Mari Oquiñena stressed in his keynote address to the 1,500 delegates to the Department of Education (DepEd) Bicol’s annual Regional Secondary Schools Press Conference (RSSPC) held this year at the Marcial O. Rañola Memorial School (MORMS) in Guinobatan town.
Some 1,500 delegates has registered to the RSSPC of which 1,196 are student-writers while the rest are teacher-advisers and education program division supervisors.
Oquiñena told the participants to think on a legacy they wish to leave behind in this world expounding on the RSSPC theme, “Campus Journalism and Transformational Leadership.”
DepEd Bicol officer in charge Ramon Fiel Abcede also affirmed the role of young people in the transformation of the society, noting that every campus newspaper is training ground for writers, offers opportunities to develop writing skills to express their thoughts.
He also reminded the young writers on the concept of responsibility, on what is ethically right or wrong.
According to DepEd Bicol Campus Journalism coordinator Joan Lagata, the three-day competition which commenced on January 29 featured various writing contests such as science and health feature, copyreading and headline writing, sports writing, editorial, news and feature writing. Other events are photo journalism, scriptwriting and radio broadcasting, collaborative publishing and editorial cartooning.
The outstanding campus journalist as well as the outstanding school paper adviser were also selected during the event, Lagata added.
The conference aims to demonstrate understanding on the importance of journalism by expressing it through different journalistic endeavors and approaches, sustain advocacy on social consciousness, provide a venue for an enriching learning experience for students interested in pursuing journalism as a career, promote responsible journalism and fair and ethical use of social media, and enhance journalistic competence through healthy and friendly competitions..
The PIA is one of the regular supporting agencies of the DepEd for both the provincial , city and the regional eliminations of the annual schools press conferences for both the elementary and the secondary levels. The regional press conference for the elementary level will be held at the Iriga Central School on February 5 to 7 this year. (MAL/JJJP-PIA5)
