LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 3 (PIA) – The Employees Compensation Commission (ECC) has since intensified its information and advocacy campaigns in the Bicol region to ensure appropriate compensation to workers in the event of work-related contingencies.
“Some 200 employers composed of company owners and human resource managers in the region turned out during the series of advocacy seminar employees compensation program (ECP) manifesting their support and cooperation to implement the program in their respective organizations for the welfare of the workers,” Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Bicol regional director Nathaniel Lacambra.
The ECC is a government corporation and an attached agency under the DOLE created in November 1, 1974 by virtue of Presidential Decree (PD) 442 or the Labor Code of the Philippines. ECC became fully operational with the issuance of PD 626 which took effect on January 1, 1975.
“We are here to intensify awareness of workers and employers about the ECP and its benefits particularly in the countryside,” said ECC officer in charge Jonathan Villasoto during the advocacy seminar in Naga City last month.
According toVillasoto, the seminar focused on the three aspects of the ECP: prevention, compensation, and rehabilitation.
The activity was also attended by SSS medical officers, GSIS claim officers and TESDA personnel, which are significant in achieving the ECP’s successful dissemination and implementation.
ECC information officer Yvette Bonavente meanwhile explained during the radio program “Aramon Ta Daw (Let Us Know) that the commission is a quasi-judicial corporate entity created to implement the ECP, which on the other hand provides a package of benefits for public and private sector employees and their dependents in the event of work-connected contingencies such as sickness, injury, disability or death.
As implementor of the ECP, ECC is mandated by law to provide meaningful and appropriate compensation to workers. It formulates policies and guidelines for the improvement of the employees' compensation program, reviews and decides on appeal to all EC claims disapproved, and initiates policies and programs toward adequate occupational health and safety and accident prevention in the working environment.
As the champion of the welfare of the Filipino worker, ECC builds and sustains among employees and employers a culture of safety and healthful environment in the workplace, ensures at all times that workers are informed of their rights, benefits and privileges under the ECP, develops and implements innovative policies, programs and projects that meet the needs of workers with work-connected contingencies and promptly and fairly resolves all cases brought before it, Bonavente added.
