Salceda leads tree planting at Mt. Mayon on Valentine’s Day

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb 17 (PIA) – The province of Albay has marked its renewed commitment to protect and nurture the environment through a tree-planting activity held at Mayon Rest House in Tabaco City in time for Valentine’s Day.

“This is how the Provincial Government of Albay will renew its commitment to its undying love for nature and the environment — with a tree-planting activity,” Albay governor Joey Salceda said.

Salceda, together with the employees of the provincial government and other government agencies, public and private sectors, non-government organizations, schools and civic groups joined the activity at the famous Mayon Volcano Natural Park and Mayon Rest House in Barangay Buang, Tabaco City .

Some 300 varied seedlings composed of mahogany, narra, gmelina and fruit-bearing trees were planted along these areas surrounding Mt. Mayon.
Mayon Rest House is located along the slopes of Mayon Volcano at an altitude of 2,500 ft above sea level.

It is one of the top destinations in Albay famous for panoramic and stunning views of surrounding towns, oceans and mountains.

The event, dubbed Tree Planting/Greening Environment and Information and Education Campaign on Trees Protection and Management, is part of the National Greening Program (NGP) of Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III.

NGP is a massive forest rehabilitation program of the government established by virtue of Executive Order No. 26 issued on Feb. 24, 2011 by the President.

It seeks to grow 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares nationwide within a period of six years, from 2011 to 2016.

Aside from being a reforestation initiative, the NGP is also seen as a climate change mitigation strategy as it seeks to enhance the country’s forest stock to absorb carbon dioxide, which is largely blamed for global warming.

It is also designed to reduce poverty, providing alternative livelihood activities for marginalized upland and lowland households relating to seedling production and care and maintenance of newly-planted trees.(MAL/SAA-PIA5/Albay)
