BY: ANALIZA S. MACATANGAY

NAGA CITY, Feb. 14 (PIA) --- The Bicol Medical Center (BMC) compound will soon be home to three new buildings to expand the area of the hospital and to house the ER Diagnostic Center and Cancer Center.

BMC director Dr. Efren Nerva said that the BMC development project will cost some P1.051 billion under the of the Department of Health’s (DOH) health facility development program for four designated areas including Cagayan, Cotabato, Western Visayas and this city.

The construction of the structures is expected to start next month following the initial release of P403M by the DOH to cover the construction of an 8-floor building with a total cost of P800M.  The ER Diagnostic Center worth 200M and the Cancer Center worth P51M will be constructed afterwards.

BMC was able to avail of the big chunk of the budget following Nerva’s early response to the call of DOH Secretary Enrique Ona when the latter asked the heads of the hospitals in the country to ready a plan for the development of hospitals and facilities.

Nerva said that the 8-floor building will provide expansion for additional rooms that can accommodate 800 beds for lodging of more patients coming from different parts of the province, and even patients from outside of the region.

At present, BMC has a 500-bed capacity.

The ground floor will house the office of the hospital administrator, while sections for the admission, pharmacy, billing, radiology department, X-ray equipment, MRI, CT scan, ultrasound and digital x-ray will also be in the same floor. ICU complex and the cardiopulmonary neuro laboratory  will be situated  on the second floor  while 15 operating rooms will be established in the third floor.

The surgical and orthopedic department will be placed at the fouth floor, OB and pediatric departments or servaice wards at the fifth floor, internal medicine department at the sixth floor, while the seventh and eighth floor will house the private and semi- private rooms.

Emergency room will also be at the ground floor, diagnostic wellness clinic for check up in the second floor, cardiac operating room and hemodynamic room on the third floor while on the fourth and fifth floor will be the training complex and auditorium.

Nerva is optimistic that the construction of the Cancer Center will also be completed the soonest possible time which will be equipped with state of the art facilities, laboratories and linear accelerator.

The development of the Bicol Medical Center pursues the thrust on Universal Health Care Program of President Benigno S. Aquino III.

The measure responds to the call for a responsive health system which aims to enhance the responsiveness of the health system and client satisfaction by improving the quality hospitals and health care facilities all over the country.  (MAL/LSM-PIA5/CamSur)
