VIRAC, Catanduanes, Jan. 17, (PIA)- The Department of Health (DOH) provincial health team here in cooperation with the provincial government of Catanduanes, has stepped up information education campaign to prevent infection and spread of cases of measles .
Governor Araceli B. Wong said although there is still no suspected case of measles in the province, the measure intends to prevent the occurrence and spread of the disease.
Wong said the intensified drive against measles also coincides with the preparation for the hosting of the province of 2014 Palarong Bicol.
Athletes will be monitored closely and appropriate actions shall be undertaken by concerned authorities to avoid infection or spread of the virus which might affect other athletes and the public in general.
Department of Education Catanduanes Division officer-in-charge Jose L. Doncillo also said that they have already advised school heads and principals to educate pupils and students regarding the disease.
Directions have also been given to schools officials to send home students with symptoms of the disease as directed by Education Secretary Armin Luistro in a DepEd memo.
Meanwhile, DOH Provincial Health Office Team Leader Dr. Rey J. Millena said that they will conduct vaccination in the different towns of the province and they shall also conduct door-to-door immunization to reach the remote areas of the province.
He said that Children who are eligible for vaccination are those who did not receive their measles vaccines during their childhood, especially at the age of 6 months to less than 5 years old.
He also advise those who have symptoms of measles like high fever, runny nose, cough, red and watery eyes, and small white spots inside the cheeks to immediately consult health authorities and medical practitioners. (MAL/EAB-PIA5/Catanduanes)
