SORSOGON CITY, Nov. 6 (PIA) – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Sorsogon has advised to all local government units (LGUs) and other concerned agencies to put in place their respective contingency plans and implement preparedness and mitigation measures in the wake of cyclone "Haiyan" or Yolanda keeping its track towards the country.
In the latest advisory, PDRRMO chief Raden D. Dimaano urged DRR entities and authorities to keep an eye on the severe weather system for updates on its variable condition, also implement the needed pre-emptive measures, particularly for those areas considered vulnerable.
"Chief executives of all local governments, along withe local DRRMCs, should carry out emergency measures as may be necessary during and in the aftermath of man-made and natural disasters and calamities," he said..
"They should ensure to strengthen the capacities of LGUs and communities in mitigating and preparing for, responding to, and recovering from the impact of disasters," he added.
Meanwhile, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has cautioned the public of a strong weather disturbance that may cross the Philippine threshold and could make a landfall Friday within this week. The weather bureau stated that the tropical cyclone will be named “Yolanda” as it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
PAGASA disclosed that the cyclone is over the Carolina Islands estimated at 2,170 kilometers east of Mindanao, packing maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 120 kilometers per hour. It is forecasted by Pagasa to move West at 25 kilometers per hour.
It is expected to enter the PAR on Thursday morning with the possibility of making a landfall in some parts of the Visayas and Luzon Region. (MAL/BAR-PIA5/Sorsogon)
