Albay guv suspends classes in all levels, work in government in the wake of typhoon Yolanda

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 6 (PIA) – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) of Albay has ordered the suspension of classes in all levels, both in public and private schools, and work in government offices  starting Thursday, Nov. 7, until lifted to prepare for the impending threats of typhoon Yolanda.

Albay Gov. Joey Salceda, chair of the PDRRMC, said the directives formed part of the measures of the provincial government to mitigate the effects of the impending disaster on the lives of the locales and achieve anew the “zero casualty” in times of calamities.

“We suspend classes earlier for the families of these students as well as teachers and school administrators to provide time for themselves to also prepare for the storm, on the other hand, ready several schools usually utilized as evacuation centers,” he said.

The suspension of work in government offices, according to Salceda, will exempt those identified as critical to emergency response, including the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Health (DOH), Bicol Regional Teaching and Training Hospital (BRTTH) and all government facilities in cities and towns.

Salceda said the suspension does not also cover government financial institutions, especially banks, that people have still to transact with for their financial necessity until Friday which they may also need to prepare for the storm.

Establishments selling basic goods, groceries, medicines, among others, are encouraged to have open store until tomorrow afternoon to cater to consumers that need to secure stocks also in anticipation of the severe weather disturbance.

Meanwhile, Bicol regional director Bernardo R. Alejandro IV of Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) and chair of the Bicol Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC) has also recommended the same measures to DRR authorities of other provinces of the region, especially Masbate and Sorsogon, that may be affected by the brunt of the storm.
