VIRAC, Catanduanes, Sept. 6, (PIA) - The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has commenced works on the upgrading and improvement of the Bagamanoc- Pandan route.
According to DPWH Catanduanes district engineer Romeo Doloiras, the road development project will be undertaken by Cavite Ideal International Construction & Development Corporation (CavDeal) at a contract cost of P316.9 million.
The project, classified under Contract Package II and II-A, will cover the construction of new concrete pavement of 5.42 kilometers of intermittent sections from Viga to barangay Bacak in Bagamanoc; reconstruction of 26.80-lineal meter Bugao bridge; widening of 132.60-lineal meter Banquerohan bridge; earthworks, drainage structures and slope protection works which is expected to be completed on February 2015.
Another project, under the Contract Package III-B, will include the 16-kilometer Bacak-Minaile road section in Bagamanoc and with an estimated cost of P1 billion for the construction of 15.905 kilometers of new concrete pavement; reconstruction, widening and preventive maintenance of one bridge with a length of 45 lineal meters; earthworks; and, drainage structures and slope protection works.
DPWH targets a start date of October 2013 and a completion date of May 2015.
On the other hand, the Minaile-Pandan road section with a length of 32.95 kilometers (with exception) is covered by Contract Package III-C worth P1, 285,550,000.00. Aside from earthworks, drainage structures and slope protection works, this contract will involve the construction of 32.95 kilometers of new concrete pavement, the reconstruction of eight bridges, and reconstruction, widening and preventive maintenance of one bridge. The target start and completion dates has yet to be determined by DPWH.
Meanwhile, Congressman Cesar V. Sarmiento said that pursuant to President Benigno S. Aquino III’s directive to the DPWH to complete the concreting of all primary national roads by 2014 and all secondary roads by 2016, all the key routes in the province shall already paved by 2017.
He added that completion of roads will be of great help to farmers and fishermen and as well as in the enhancement of tourism development on the island.
The entire Catanduanes project is funded under the Road Upgrading and Preservation Project (RUPP) being undertaken by the Philippine government with financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
