Search is on for Galing Mason Award

By Joseph John J. Perez

LEGAZPI CITY, Aug. 15 (PIA) -- The Holcim Philippines Incorporated, a cement manufacturer venture, in cooperation with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), has launched this year's 7th Galing Mason Award to honor Filipino masons who show great skill and pride in their work and are also model citizens in their community.

In a press statement, Holcim Philippines announced it has not started accepting nomination for working masons who are at least 25 years old and resident in their area for at least a year.

The nominee must be a holder of valid Certificate of Masonry from TESDA.

Any reputable individual or legitimate organization may nominate a qualified mason. Certificates of good moral character from at least two local organizations, along with other necessary documents should accompany the nomination to be submitted to TESDA provincial office in their areas. Nominations will be accepted until August 16, 2013.

Nominees will go through three levels of selection process: provincial, regional and national. Only the top three nominees from each region will compete in the regional level, the winners of which will move on to the national competition. The winner will be chosen based on his or her productivity, technical competence and professionalism. The awarding ceremony is set on October 25 at New World Hotel in Makati.

The most outstanding mason will get P150,000 cash plus a Mason Statuette crafted by renowned Paete artist Glen Cabanan. Meanwhile, the regional winners will receive P25,000 cash while the nominating individual or organization with the most number of nominees will be rewarded with P15,000.

The First Galing Mason Award in 2007 was bagged by Sergio Barliso of Cebu, the 2009 competition was won by Rodante Andres of Capiz and the 2011 grand champions were Eduardo Latap of the National Capital Region and Alejandro Tagle of Cagayan Valley.

“Masons play a critical role since they help build structures necessary for our country’s development,” Holcim Phils. Sustainable Development Head Michael Cabalda said. It is fitting to honor those who do their job well and at the same time are role models in their communities, Cabilda added. “We hope that organizations familiar with these workers will go out of their way to nominate them.”

The Holcim Galing Mason Award, which is held every two years, is part of the company’s flagship corporate social responsibility program done in partnership with TESDA, Philippine Contractors Association ((PCA) and Association of Construction and Informal Workers (ACIW). Its other components are the Galing Mason Olympics, a three-day masonry competition and the Galing Mason Training, a seven-day skills enhancement and certification program.

Holcim Philippines implemented the Galing mason Program to help improve the skills and knowledge of masons about their trade and professionalize the industry. The company has helped train over 8,000 mason under the program.
