DAET, Camarines Norte, Aug 13 (PIA) -- The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) bared its disaster preparedness and mitigation programs and activities in the province during “Talakayan sa PIA” held July 31.
Carlos Galvez, chairperson of the PDRRMC, said that the provincial council was recently named “Best PDRRMC” in Bicol as Gawad Kalasag Awardee together with the Camarines Norte National High School, first place in Best School Urban Category; DQ Liwag National High School, first place in Best School Rural Category and San Felipe National High School, second place in Best School Rural Category.
He said the disaster consciousness month activities in the province was highlighted with the province-wide registration of the National Service Reserve Corps (NSRC) who are graduates of the National Service Training Program (NSTP) to be tapped during disaster response and rehabilitation.
Galvez said he is hopeful that the municipal disaster risk reduction and management and climate change adaptation (DRR/CCA) plans of the 12 towns will be finished this year and after 2013, barangays will also have their own plans.
Provincial Director Edwin Garcia said that disaster alertness is a 24/7 preparation wherein the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) is continuously conducting trainings and capability building for preparedness.
“Dapat maialis natin ang tao sa panganib o alisin ang panganib sa mga tao” he said.
Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) of the provincial government representative Thelma Bardon said their office was tasked to study hazard characterization, vulnerability and risk assessment based on hazard, risk to properties and people as basis of their planning specially in the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP).
She said that the CLUP will serve as a tool for decision makers in the implementation of their programs and projects in their area.
Ramon Avila, focal person for disaster preparedness program of the Department of Education (DepEd), congratulated the three schools cited as winners in this year’s Gawad Kalasag wherein the DQ National High School as representative of Bicol is expecting to become the first placer in the national awards.
He said the schools in the province have conducted several activities in connection with the disaster consciousness month.
Teresita Orendain former principal of DQ Liwag said that they held several cluster trainings for teachers, students and parents and they mainstreamed DRR/CCA. Orendainhe will also introduce this to the Moreno Integrated School being its new principal.
