LEGAZPI CITY, Aug. 4 (PIA) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through its Ecosystem Research and Development Service, has been closely monitoring the situation of the various seed production areas in the Bicol region, the top regional official of the agency said.
Gilbert Gonzales, DENR Bicol regional executive director, said they had sent field personnel of the ERDS in the past two weeks in these areas to check on the progress of the growth of seedlings whose production they had contracted to winning bidders earlier this year.
The seedlings of the native trees include those of the so-called “plus trees” or seedlings of first class trees that have high survival rate.
The sites visited are those in Barangay Damacan, Bacacay, Albay; Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon; Barangay Olas, Lagonoy, Camarines Sur; and Barangay Dangan Guisican, Labo, Camarines Norte.
Gonzales said the DENR field personnel documented the plus trees in the seedling production areas.
The DENR Bicol regional office has intensified its seedling production and plantation in the region in line with the agency's National Greening Program, which was officially launched in May 2011.
The NGP aims to plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares of land by 2016.
For 2011, 89.6 million seedlings were planted nationwide, while in 2012, a total of 125.6 million seedlings were planted. (Emmanuel P. Solis/LGU Legazpi City/MAL/PIA5)
