CSU to host national biodiversity meeting

VIRAC, Catanduanes, July 4 (PIA) -- Catanduanes State University (CSU) with the Provincial Government of Catanduanes, Green Philippines, Inc., and other partner institutions will organize the 4th Philippine National Biodiversity Meeting (BIOME4) on October 20-22, in observance of the 2013 UN International Year of Water Cooperation.

With the theme, "Fostering Cooperation in Water Biodiversity Conservation in Marine and Freshwater Systems for Island Development", BIOME4 is being held as part of CSU’s commitment to the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) to promote and facilitate technical and scientific cooperation among the various stakeholders on biodiversity in the country, particularly in the rural areas.

The annual event will tackle studies/research, innovations and other scientific undertakings along the areas of Marine and Coastal Biodiversity (Fish, Mollusks & Crustaceans (FMCs), Mangroves, Marine Turtles, Intertidal Biota, Coral Reefs, Seagrass, MPAs, Inland Waters Biodiversity [Rivers, Streams, Reservoirs, Water Monitors Varanus olivaceous, V. marmoratus)];

Forest and Mountain Biodiversity [Philippine Mahogany Dipterocarpaceae), Rattan (Calanus spp.), Pterydophytes and Indigenous Forest tree species); Island Biodiversity (Island Biogeography, Catanduanes Narrow Mouthed frog (Kaloula kokacii)]; and Agricultural Biodiversity [Abaca (Musa textilis) plantation, tiger grass or “Lasa” (Thysanolaena spp.)]

The conference's specific topics are Biodiversity Science in Water, Land and Air; Biodiversity Conservation and Management; Biodiversity Education and Communication; Water Science, Engineering and Technology; Forest Biodiversity and Conservation of Philippine Mahogany; Mangrove Science and Aquasilviculture;Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management; Rivers, Estuaries and Wetlands (REWs); Social Representations in Natural Resource Management; and Ecological Economics and Natural Resource Accounting; and Indigenous Knowledge in Biodiversity Conservation.

Meanwhile, the Catanduanes State University is starting its call for participation and sponsorships in the BIOME5 in 2014 International Symposium On Biodiversity, Culture and Society (BIOCULTURES) and 5th Philippine National Biodiversity Meeting.

The event, dubbed 2014 International Symposium on BIOCULTURES and 5th Philippine National Biodiversity Meeting BIOME5, will center on Dimensions of Innovations in Molecular Ecology, Evolution, Biomechanics and Telemetry for Island Ecology; and Biodiversity Conservation Programs in Small Islands of the Asia, the Pacific Region, Japan and Australia.
