PILI, Camarines Sur, July 19 (PIA) -- In line with the continuing effort of the provincial government to sustain the local economy of the coconut farmers in the province, Camarines Sur Governor Migz Villafuerte released an initial check amounting to P716, 870.00 as payment for 138 coco farmers coming from the municipalities of Libmanan, Siruma and Tinambac in a simple ceremony held yesterday at Villa Del Rey, here.
The payment covers the expenses incurred by the coco farmers during the five-month period of growing the said seedlings in their respective farms.
In support of this endeavor is the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) Regional Office under the headship of PCA OIC Regional Manager Eduardo Allorde. For calendar year 2012, 205 barangays from Camarines Sur, complementing 918 farmer-participants benefited under the PCA’s Participatory Coconut Planting Project.
“These farmers from the five (5) districts of Camarines Sur, under the CamSur1 and CamSur II coverage area of PCA helped in growing coco seedlings numbering to a total of 208,646 coco seedlings at 2 feet tall, in their respective municipalities. They were given incentives for their efforts and we at PCA are very thankful that the provincial government has its full support on this program,” Allorde said.
Allorde confirmed the good news that they have also increased the payment on every coco seedlings that the farmers can grow from P30.00 to P40.00.
Also under its Coconut seedlings dispersal project for 2012, PCA was able to establish 21 nurseries in various parts of the province. Nursery sites can be found in Del Gallego, Ragay, Lupi and Sipocot in the 1st District of Camarines Sur. In District II, the municipalities of Libmanan, Pamplona, Pasacao, Minalabac and Milaor are also maintaining nursery sites in their respective municipalities.
Districts 3, 4 and 5 also caters to the same project involving the municipalities of: Naga, Ocampo, Magarao and Pili under District 3; Caramoan, Garchitorena, Sangay, Presentacion, Goa and Tinambac under District 4 and the towns of Baao, Bato, Buhi, Iriga, Nabua and Balatan for District 5.
Governor Migz reiterated his support not just to the coco farmers but also to all kinds of agricultural farmers in the province. He expressed his intention to create an Executive order that will establish a Local Coconut Industry Development Council that would oversee the needs and concerns of coco farmers in the province.
He also expressed his intention to revive the negotiation on the construction of the Vita Coco post processing facility formerly being pushed by his father, former Governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte.
Three coco planters from Pili, Camarines Sur; Pablo Oriel, Sebastian Bergantin and Dominguito Belleza were also given coco seedlings and fertilizer by PCA. (LSMacatangay/ PIA-Camarines Sur)
