Army lead bikers for peaceful election

PILI, Camarines Sur, April 12 (PIA) -- At least 500 cycling enthusiasts composed of riders and bikers from various bike and motorbike organizations joined the Bike for HOPE (Honest, Orderly and Peaceful Election) 2013 Caravan, on Sunday (April 7).

The event commenced at the Freedom Stadium, San Jose here and ended at the Iriga City gymnasium.

Leading the pack of riding aficionados are the officers and soldiers of the 9th Infantry Division headed by no less than Major General Romeo V Calizo, Commander of the 9th ID. The said activity also endeavors to send the message that the government troop supports the government’s call for a peaceful holding of the May 2013 elections.

“This noble act gives us the opportunity to show to our countrymen the true essence of one of our cherished values – Bayanihan – kung saan pati sa pagdating sa halalan, sama – sama parin tayo sa pagsulong upang ito ay maging matapat, maayos at mapayapa,” Calizo said in an interview.

Calizo added that the bikers participation and support for the activity exemplifies the essence of unanimity of Bicolanos and that various sectors of society and agencies of the government can work together to attain HOPE.

Partakers representing various bikers association like the Naga Basilica Bikers Club, Pili Bikers Club, Mt Asog Mountain Bikers Association of Iriga City, PNP bikers from the municipalities of Baao and Pili and from the cities of Naga and Iriga also supported the said endeavor.

Enthusiasts from the 9th ID Bikers Club, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Rotary Club of Naga City and Naga City Fury Riders Club also actively called on their members to join the said caravan.

9th ID Spokesman Major Angelo Guzman said that aside from welcoming the summer season with the said biking activity, the move was also meant to rouse the participation of other sectors of the community and a call for them to support a peaceful, clean and honest elections this coming May.

“We at the Philippine Army are one with the government in calling for a nonviolent and fair elections as the month of May draw nearer. We would want to convey the message that together we can achieve a peaceful election by working harmoniously with one another,” De Guzman added.

The activity culminated with the signing of the participants on the Commitment Wall and the release of white balloons in Iriga City. (MAL/LSM/MAGuzman,9th ID/PIA5)
