"Project 12.12.12" to rehabilitate mangrove areas

VIRAC, Catanduanes, Dec 14 (PIA) -- At least 200,000 mangrove propagules were planted by volunteers to the different mangrove sites in the town particularly at Brgy. Palnab del Sur, Virac.
The mangrove planting activity dubbed as “Project 12.12.12” was a joint activity of the Congressional District Office, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Provincial Government of Catanduanes.
The event focused on the rehabilitation of the island’s mangrove areas and also served as the launching of the National Greening Program’s Mascot named GREENY, the newest endorser of the DENR’s various environmental programs.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Joaquin Ed Guerrero said that the original number of propagules to be planted during the activity is only 121,212 but due to the unexpected number of participants the propgagules reached 200,000.
The activity was participated by employees of the Provincial and Local Government Unit, Non-Government Organizations, students of the different educational institutions in the province and as well as local officials. (MAL/EAB-PIA5 Catanduanes)
