Bicol marks Maritime safety week

By Sally A.Atento

LEGAZPI CITY, Oct. 1 (PIA) -- This year’s celebration of the National Maritime Week from September 24-30 focused on the intensified government’s programs and regulations to promote maritime safety, said Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Bicol commander Commodore Joel Garcia.

This year’s theme, “100 years after the Titanic” commemorates the Titanic accident in 1912 which resulted to the loss of thousands of lives leading to the creation of maritime safety regulations in shipping industry of which 80 percent of our livelihood rely on, Garcia said in an interview at the Ugnayan sa Bicol radio program of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) regional office here.

PCG Bicol led the celebration in the region including the maritime forum on September 28, coastal clean-up on 29, and the week-long training on First Responder and Water Search and Rescue Operations (WASAR).

Such trainings, according to Garcia, are part of the intensified effort of the PCG to strengthen partnership with the coastal barangays in the region.

“About 80 percent of our search-and-rescue operations are civilian components so we need to build their skills through capacity-building trainings especially on disaster response and preparedness,” he said.

Aside from maritime safety and resource development programs, marine life protection is also one of the programs intensified by the PCG in the region.

Garcia added that food security trainings, alternative livelihood and reinforced education are among the comprehensive approach conducted by the PCG to address illegal maritime activities particularly of small fishers.

Likewise, he encouraged the public to be involved in their advocacy especially in their own coastal areas.

“Maritime safety and marine environment protection is not just the duty of the Coastguard, it is everybody’s concern,” Garcia said. (MAL/SAA-PIA5, Albay)
