LEGAZPI CITY, June 1 (PIA) –June is the National Kidney Month in the Philippines and the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) is leading the nation in celebrating awareness of kidney diseases and their prevention.
According to NKTI, stage-five chronic kidney disease (CKD-V) affects some 10,800 Filipinos yearly. Each year, 30,000 to 40,000 CKD-V patients around the world need to undergo dialysis.
Early detection and prevention of kidney failure is vital, as is the need to ensure that acute cases avoid, if possible, the progression to CKD-V. Prevention and early management, although very extensive can achieve significant benefits for the public.
With the theme: “Bato Kong Alay, Bago Mong Buhay,” this year’s celebration focuses on kidney donors, whether living or deceased and also their families. Certain activities have been lined-up to highlight the celebration, which will be done in various parts of the country with multi-sectorial involvement.
In line with the celebration, the organizing committee, headed by physician Carlos Ramon N. Torres, Jr., has prepared a number of activities. These include outreach programs and free medical services like rectal exams and urinalysis.
The nationwide celebration for the whole month of June is made possible by the coordination and collaboration of committed partners in the promotion of health care.
Among those that have been the Institution’s advocates are the Department of Health (DOH), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Philippine Urological Association (PUA), Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN), Transplant Society of the Philippines (TSP), and the Kidney Foundation of the Philippines (KFP).
In Bicol, advocates of kidney health awareness will gather for the Public Health Congress on ‘Renal Disease Control Program’ (REDCOP), through the coordinated efforts of NKTI and DOH.(EAD/JBE/PIA5)
