FDA warns public vs untested juice drink

By Julius Embile

LEGAZPI CITY, June 23 (PIA) – Committed to their duty of protecting the public against bogus dietary products, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) warns the public of a product labeled as “Guyabano Juice” with unapproved therapeutic claims.

According to a statement released last June 14, the FDA has been receiving reports of a guyabano juice drink which claims to have multiple health benefits. One such claim, as bannered on its label, is that it has “Natural cancer cell killer, 10,000 times stronger than drug used in chemotherapy.”

Aside from cancer curing abilities, the product claims to lower high blood pressure, boosts good cholesterol level, keeps bones strong, and prevents ailments like anemia, migraine, urinary track infection (UTI), leg cramps and pregnancy complications.

For its nutritional profits, the product boasts its claim to be a rich source of vitamin C, B, B1 and Potassium.

As per the FDA, these health claims are false and not duly approved. The product itself is not even registered with the FDA and has not been tested by the authorities for safety and quality.

Untested products, such as this so-called “guyabano juice”, present great dangers to consumers, like illnesses from poisoning and even death.  FDA also stressed that food products should not bear any misleading, deceptive, and false claims in their labels or promotional materials that will provide erroneous impression on a product’s identity.

Selling of untested products is a crime, under Section 14 of Republic Act 9711. As such, in the interest of public safety and health, officers of FDA’s Field Regulatory Operations Office (FROO) and other law enforcement outfits are already on the move to ensure sale and distribution of these products are stopped.

In order to make sure these goals are met, the government is also imploring the public’s cooperation and vigilance. The people are strongly advised to report to the necessary authorities if they are to spot anyone selling these “guyabano juice” or any of the same products. (MAL/JBE/PIA5)
