VIRAC, Catanduanes, May 16, (PIA) -- The Abaca Festival Committee, under the auspices of provincial government of Catanduanes, in cooperation with the Provincial Tourism Office, will spearhead a techno demo on mushroom culture and abaca scrunch making on May 24, 2016 at the Capitol Grounds here.
According to .Carmel B. Garcia, provincial tourism officer of Catanduanes, the activity will provide additional agricultural perspectives in venturing in the trade of mushroom and abaca scrunch as a livelihood undertaking.
The techno demo, spearheaded by the Provincial Agricultural Services Office (PASO) together with the Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Science and Technology, will present new techniques in mushroom culture and further show the health benefits and sustainability of income for the community.
PASO head Roberto Ceballo said that the mushroom culture training hopes to enlighten and supplement ideas to further improve trade to farmers, especially those who uses other media other than abaca such as rice straw, coco dust, rice bran, rice hull and many others.
He added that for years now, the mushroom culture has been gaining popularity from household consumers to hotel and restaurants as a connoisseur’s delight.
The demand for mushrooms in the urban and rural areas has grown because of the preference for pesticide free food.
"Demand is high not only because of the health benefits and nutritional values but as well as the availability of the indigenous raw materials, small area requirement for growing, less capital needed for investment and potential profits," Ceballo noted.
Meanwhile, abaca scrunch making training is designed to demonstrate the application of abaca fibers in the trade of abaca scrunch.
Abaca Scrunch is made from matted fine fibers of abaca bonded by starch solution or glue. It is used to produce finished products such as placemats, handbags, photo frames, among others.
The training will be a combination of trainer demonstrating the technique and hands-on activity by the participants. (MAL/EAB/PTO/PIA5/Catanduanes/PTO)
