DOST trains soldiers on mushroom production

By  Julius Embile

LEGAZPI CITY, May 30 (PIA)—The Department of Science and Technology’s Provincial Science and Technology Center (DOST-PSTC) here conducted recently what was dubbed as “Technology Training on Mushroom Production” for Army personnel.

At the request of the Philippine Army Support Command’s 5th Forward Service Support Unit (5FSSU-ASCOM-PA) and tapping the expertise of the Legazpi City Agriculture Office, DOST-Bicol held the event with the objective of providing soldiers with livelihood and capability to assist communities where sources of food and income are scarce.

With the threat of the current ‘El Niño’ and predicted La Niña phenomenon, the training focused on the production and cultivation of mushrooms as the plant cannot be critically affected by changes in temperature of the environment.

Government agriculturists say mushrooms can be cultivated indoors and are widely used as meat substitute or extender.

During the training, modern technology in mushroom growing was demonstrated and participants were  given a hand-on experience in mushroom production.

Cristina Villaraza, a resource person on agricultural technology, recommended the use of oyster mushroom as it was easy she said to cultivate and can thrive anywhere in the country.

According to Villaraza, oyster mushrooms only take three days to cultivate “so a daily harvest is feasible.”

At Legazpi City’s market, mushrooms can be sold for P300 a kilo.

Participants were given three fruit bags of oyster mushrooms each, harvest of which could be realized in one week.

Organizers said they envisioned that after the training, production of mushroom can be done right at home or at military camps, whether it be for personal consumption or for sale. (EAD/JBE/PIA5)
