LEGAZPI CITY, May 25 (PIA) -- Some 329 job applicants were hired on the spot (HOTS) in this year’s Labor Day jobs fair led by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in the Bicol region.
DOLE Bicol recorded some 3,206 job applicants in the simultaneous Mega Job and Livelihood Fair at the Ayala and Pacific Mall in Legazpi City on May 1 and the Finale Job Fair at SM Naga City on May 2 graced by Assistant Secretary Ma. Joji V. Aragon.
However even with the high number of applicants registered, DOLE Bicol’s record shows that only less than half were listed under “qualified applicants” of which 422 are male and 862 are female.
“They (HOTS) are really lucky. Imagine out of these thousands you get picked right then and there. We are more than happy with the results, we met our HOTS target and for sure more Bicolanos will be hired even after Labor Day,” DOLE Bicol Regional Director Atty. Ma. Karina Perida-Trayvilla said.
Trayvilla said DOLE Bicol has earlier set 20% HOTS target from the overall number of qualified applicants, which so far is the toughest target compared to the past years.
“Actually we were worried. Our HOTS target this year is actually doubled at 20%. Good thing that everybody cooperated which is the reason why we still achieved it,” she said.
Trayvilla added that the high recorded HOTS may be connected to the massive advocacy campaign done by the office this March in time for the graduation rites including the advertisement tie-up with ABS-CBN and MOR Bicol as the official media partner for the Labor Day 2016 events.
“Yes we do believe that the media played a vital role in all this,” Trayvilla said.
She cited that although not all HOTS will be staying in their newly found jobs as some might even change jobs after about a month, it will still serve as a stepping stone in finding better jobs to have a brighter and more secured future.
“Staying on a job really depends on the person. We cannot control it. All we do at DOLE is to give them an opportunity to find one,” Trayvilla noted.
Moreover, DOLE Bicol has recorded large percentage of HOTS who have actually stayed on their “first job” and have “climbed up the ladder” based on previous job fairs.
The Labor Day 2016 Job Fairs were conducted in cooperation with Ayala Malls Legazpi, Pacific Mall Legazpi, SM Naga, Public Employment Service Office (PESO) of Albay, Metro Naga and Camarines Sur; Naga Colleges Foundation, ABS-CBN and MOR Bicol. (MAL/SAA-PIA5/Albay)
