LEGAZPI CITY, April 18 (PIA) – On April19, eighteen days before the 2016 National and Local Elections, aspiring house representatives from all across Albay are now given a chance to state where they stand regarding the peace and order in Mindanao.
These candidates will sit together in attendance of the ‘Usapang Kapayapaan: A Forum for Congressional Candidates’.
The event intends to affirm legislative action, in order to ensure lasting peace in Mindanao, from the would-be congressmen once they take office after the May 9 national elections.
The forum for congressional aspirants will be held in Bicol University: College of Education’s training hall at Legazpi City, as part of a nationwide peace discussion including other ‘Usapang: Kapayapaan’ held at La Union City, Cebu City, Cagayan de Oro City, Davao City.
Attending these discussions are representatives of the ‘Ako Bicol’ party list. Also, taking part in the forum is Joey Sarte-Salceda, incumbent governor of Albay and now gunning for the congressional seat for the second district of Albay.
The two lawyers competing for the representation of Albay’s first district, Atty. Tony Betito and Atty. Ted Contacto, have also confirmed their participation. For Albay’s third district, candidates Oliver Olaybal and Elmer Pornel will also be joining the talks.
In the midst of the campaign period, this is the candidates’ plans for the said topic will be subject for assessment by those involved, namely the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Representing the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) is GPH chief negotiator Professor Miriam Coronel-Ferrer; and representing the MILF is Professor Abhoud Syed Lingga.
The forum is organized and facilitated by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA)- Region 5, and will also be attended by the delegates from Albay’s public, private and mass media sectors.
The candidates’ plans on this sensitive matter of peace will be subject of scrutiny from these sectors. Media coverage of the affair was also arranged as it is also the forums objective to assist the Albayanos in weighing their options for the upcoming elections. (MAL/JBEmbile-PIA5/Albay)
