VIRAC, Catanduanes, March 30 (PIA) -- The Provincial Government of Catanduanes is ready for the celebration of the 1st Abaca Festival in the province from May 23-27, 2016.
According to Hon. Jose Romeo Francisco, Abaca Festival Steering Committee chair, this year’s celebration will focus on the theme: “Abaca Festival: Banwaan Asenso, Turismo!”.
He added that the theme aims to give recognition to the significant contribution of the abaca industry to the province’s socio-environment and economic development.
In this connection, several activities were identified and lined-up by the steering committee to highlight the milestone of the abaca industry from production, skills and technology development, processing, marketing and investments.
It will include the showcasing of various abaca by-products and distinct culture and heritage of Catandunganons in support to the tourism industry and sparring business as a whole.
The following activities and events are set: May 23, 2016, the opening program at Capitol Grounds, Unveiling of Abaca Showcase and Photo Booth; Opening of Trade Fair and Travel Expo; Street Dance Parade and the Abaca Dance Showdown at the Catanduanes Athletic Complex; On May 24 – Skills Olympics, Launching of Tramline, Pag-Hag-ot Contest and Techno Demo at Capitol Grounds;
May 25 - Jobs fair at Capitol Dome and the Paharalabaan nin Bandala Contest at Capitol Grounds; On May 26 – Investment Forum dubbed as ”The Potentials and Prospects of Abaca Pulp Factory in the Province of Catanduanes”, Paglubid Contest, Sug-ot Making contest and Techno Demo at Capitol Grounds.
On May 27, a Float Parade and Abaca Fashion Show cum Flores De Mayo will highlight the event. The fashion show will feature the evolution of Pinukpok/Sinamay from traditional saya to the modern cocktail dresses, to the elegant Philippine Terno and Baro’t Saya.
On the other hand, the Trade Fair during the one-week celebration will promote the versatility of abaca showcasing its different by-products; provide selling opportunities and expand market for locally-produced products, and generate additional sales for local producers. (MAL/EAB-PIA5/ Catanduanes)
