LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 1 (PIA) -- Department of Agriculture Sec. Proceso Alcala and Mayor Noel Rosal led the inauguration Friday last week that marked the operationalization of the newly established Organic Trading Post located at the Albay Public Market here.
Alcala said the department has since been focusing on establishing Organic Trading Post, especially in the provincial areas to provide opportunity among the farmers and fisher folks the venues to trade their organic products directly to the market or buying public, consequently higher income from their produce.
The trading post forms part of the project of DA with an allocation of P1.5 million grant to the city government here for the construction of the edifice and other facilities.
The same project was also made possible with the ratification of the City Organic Agriculture Ordinance, authored by councilor Alex Sy, to promote trading of organic agricultural products to ensure food commodities are chemical free and safe for consumption.
Rosal meanwhile said the project would serve as venue for trading of all the organic products produced by the Organic Agriculture and Vegetable Growers Association of Legazpi.
The mayor urged them to sell their products to the City Agriculture Office and also make use of the Ibalong Organic Fertilizer as the substitute in the application of high cost of fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides and other farming materials in order to reduce their farming expenses and to strengthen the agricultural activity as part of reducing the poverty incidence in the community.
The Ibalong Organic Fertilizer is derived from the various biodegradable waste materials collected by the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources and being processed by the City Agriculture Office.
Rosal furthered that all the business establishments with an organic products are also required to register to the Bureau of Agriculture andFishery Product Standard (BAFPS) to avoid mixing it with non organic products in the market..
City Agriculture Office chief Jess Kallos said that his office is processing organic fertilizer and it has been given to the legitimate farmers for free cost in order to encourage them to promote this kind of fertilizer.
Kallos noted that he is working for the construction of organic fertilizer processing unit in order to produce more volume of fertilizer that will result to more volume of organic products. (MAL-PIA5/Albay)
