LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 12 (PIA) – Wedona B. Ariola, a barangay nutrition scholar (BNS) from Quitago village in Guinobatan notched the championship of the 5th Regional Nutrition and Health Quiz held on February 4 at the Event Area of the Pacific Mall here.
Ariola, representing Albay province, bested Shierly P. Abanes of Naga City after breaking the tie for the top spot of this year's competition. Rosela B. Paguia of Barangay San Juan representing the City of Sorsogon bagged the third place.
The lady champion received a cash prize of P5,000 plus certificate of participation. The second and thirds placers received P3,000 and P2,000 pesos, respectively while all other contestants received 1,000 cash prize as consolation prize and ertificates of participation.
Eleven scholars, representing their respective province and city in the Bicol region, competed in the said regional quiz event.
The 5th Regional Nutrition and Health Quiz was spearheaded by the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) in Bicol, under the auspices of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) with funding support from the Department of Health (DOH).
The quiz event has since been utilized as a tool to assess the knowledge and ability of the volunteers on health, nutrition, food, population, current events and programs on social services.
NNC Bicol chief Arlene Reario said, "Indeed, all contestants were champions from their respective provinces and cities but only one took home the title as the regional champion. The battle of minds and enthusiasm during the whole contest was so intense that three tie breaking questions needed to be drawn on both the elimination and championship round to declare the winner."
Dr. Napoleon Arevalo, officer in charge of DOH Bicol and chair of the RNC, extended his gratitude to the support of the members of the RNC and commended NNC for this event.
"A grander quiz and bigger cash prizes for the next regional nutrition and health quiz will serve as inspiration to the BNS and BHW to study harder and do better in the next regional quiz. Who will be the next regional champion? Wait till the next regional health and nutri quiz," Arevalo said. (MAL-PIA5/Albay)
