LEGAZPI CITY, Aug. 28 (PIA) -- A total of 59 abaca weavers from the Buhatan Abaca Weavers Association (BAWA) will benefit from some P289,000 worth of assistance from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Bicol regional office to augment capitalization and resources for the development of abaca industry.
DOLE Bicol regional director Nathaniel V. Lacambra turned over the check early this month to barangay officials of Buhatan which will be utilized to purchase some 4,130 kilos of abaca fiber which will be distributed to the beneficiaries who are engage in abaca product develeopment ventures.
“Upon learning that the grant was less than P300,000, I told your barangay officials that you could have asked for more. However, you must promise us that you must cultivate what you have and develop it to an earning abaca enterprise,” Lacambra said.
The abaca fibers will be used by the beneficiaries to make ‘sinamay’ which is a common raw material for abaca handicrafts.
Sto. Domingo town is known to be one of the sources of quality handicrafts.
Lacambra furtherd that the DOLE is gearing its livelihood programs to agri-products and produced to support rural development.
The grant is part of the DOLE Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP) which is aimed in providing alternative livelihood to individuals and rural workers associations (RWAs) in support to the job creation thrust of President Aquino and to the Regional Development Agenda of the region.
