LEGAZPI CITY, Aug. 12 (PIA) – Cognisant of the need to address drug abuse problem and carry out measures to prevent this social menace, the government social welfare agency has stepped up information, education and communication, and advocacy drive for families.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Bicol regional office, in cooperation with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Bicol regional office, has commenced series of the First Level Basic Trainer’s Training on Family Drug Abuse Prevention Program (FDAPP).
FDAPP will be participated in by personnel of the local social welfare offices and other entities in the region who will train on the implementation/replication of social technology project on Family Drug Abuse Prevention Program.
DSWD Bicol regional director Arnel Garcia explained that the family, as the most basic unit of society, plays an essential role in the prevention of drug abuse, hence they, especially the elders, need to be aware of the basic concepts and the early signs of substance abuse and effective techniques for intervention designed to prevent drug abuse.
The country today faces many challenges, such as increasing violence, continuous erosion of moral values, high incidence of poverty and the rampant use of prohibited drugs, thus it is but the duty and responsibility of every citizen to help address and prevent the uptrend of these social and moral menaces.
Report on the national drug situation during the National Drug Summit in June, 2001 stated that in the past years, there were only 20,000 users using only marijuana, a locally produced drug. After 29 years, instead of abating the problem, it worsened and as per report, majority of the abuses are the youth.
FDAPP is a community based prevention program which aims to educate and prepare families and their members as well as the communities regarding the adverse effects of drug abuse.
It involves the promotion of family life enrichment activities to enhance cohesive, bonding and harmonious relationship among family members.
It further aims to equip the families with parenting and life skills towards a drug free home. The program shall be adopted by the national government agencies, local government units (LGUs), non-government organizations and other concerned entities. (MAL/EEJ/PIA5/Albay)
