LEGAZPI CITY, Aug 18 (PIA) – The province of Albay has been chosen as one of the provinces in the country that will implement the National Violence Against Women Documentation System (VAWDocS) of the Philippine Commission on Women.
VAWDocS is a secure web-based documentation system that facilitates and integrates the collection of standardized data on violence against women (VAW) from concerned government agencies, local government units and other service providers handling VAW cases.
The documentation system is used to collect and integrate data on incidents of VAW from various service providers, enforce data security/privacy mechanisms when collecting data on VAW cases, provide an accurate picture of the magnitude of VAW in the country, track the services accorded to VAW victim-survivors by various service providers and produce regular national reports that show trends in VAW incidents.
In preparation for its implementation the Gender Awareness Development (GAD) Office of the province has partnered with the PCW in conducting a leveling-off session on the requirements to implement the VAW Documentation System aimed at educating primary service providers and stakeholders that have joined forces in battling violence against women.
Representatives from the LGUs of Tiwi and Polangui, two pilot municipalities who have implemented GAD programs, social workers, representatives from the Women and Children Protection Unit of the PNP, and officers from the PGA joined the said session to learn about the new system and plan the development in complying with the requirements needed in implementing the project.
A representative from the PCW conducted the lecture and noted the key advantages of implementing the system citing the collection of accurate data where double counting is eliminated, a development of a system that harmonizes all concerned agencies, the generation of statistics which can be used in guiding national and local policies, and as a monitor to the progress in addressing VAW concerns.
The levelling-off activity is only the first of a series of steps that needs to be undertaken to realize fully the implementation of the VAWDocS.
More training will be undertaken particularly for service providers and stakeholders on the barangay level this coming October and November. Full implementation of the system is expected to be in place after these training sessions.
Earlier this week, PCW Executive Director Emeline L. Verzosa commended Albay Governor Joey Salceda and the PGA for its active engagement and commitment in implementing PCW-AECID projects, noting that Albay has improved significantly in mainstreaming gender concerns and addressing women’s issues under the governor’s leadership.(MAL/SAA/PIO-Albay/PIA5)
