LEGAZPI CITY, March 30 (PIA) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Bicol has assured local and foreign tourists of their safety during the entire summer vacation in the region starting this Lenten break by beefing up their forces and intensifying their presence.
Police Regional Office (PRO) 5 information officer Police S/Insp.Malu Calubaquib told the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) that mobile and foot patrols will be intensified in areas and in times where they are most needed.
“Police Assistance Desks (PADs) and Motorist Assistance Centers (MACs) will be established in in places of convergence, bus marshals will be deployed, checkpoint operations and PNP/AFP interdiction patrols will be jointly conducted with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to deter lawless armed elements,” Calubaquib said.
PRO 5 will be deploying a total of 5,000 PNP personnel during this holy week break with 1,198 assigned in places of convergence such as churches, malls, markets, commercial areas, parks and community centers and major tourist destinations, Calubaquib told the PIA.
“A total of 266 PNP personnel in transportation hubs and terminals such as bus terminals and train stations, 2,901 PNP personnel for route security such as standby points, road safety marshals, traffic management, checkpoint operations, mobile patrol and foot patrol and 635 PNP personnel to be deployed for vital installations and combat operations,” Calubaquib revealed.
According to Calubaquib, force multipliers and volunteer groups will also back up the police force such as the 2,556 Barangay Peace Keeping Team/Tanod/Traffic Enforcers, 631 Security Guards and 581 volunteer groups composed of non-government organizations, civil society and communication and radio enthusiasts with a total number of 3,794 volunteers.
“With the total strength of 8,794 composed of PNP personnel and volunteers, PRO 5 is confident that peace and order will be maintained during the duration of the Lenten Season and other activities that will be celebrated this vacation time,” Calubaquib told the PIA.
The movement of people generated by major events during summer and activities create traffic jams and congestions along major thoroughfares, commercial centers and places of convergence and also at this time of the year, criminals especially burglars, pickpockets, thieves and robbers usually take advantage of the convergence of people to do their criminal acts, Calubaquib notes.
PRO 5 regularly gears up for summer vacation when various activities are being observed like Holy Week, Araw ng Kagitingan, Labor Day, National Flag Day and Flores De Mayo along with consistent influx of travelers taking vacation to provinces and attending fiestas and festivals, Calubaquib told the PIA.
