PILI, Camarines Sur, March 26 (PIA)--- Retiring personnel of the 9th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army (PA) based in Barangay Tinangis, this town successfully concluded their 3-day seminar on various agriculture-based livelihood projects through the Department of Agriculture DA) Regional Office here.
DA Regional Information Officer Emily Bordado stated that this partnership between the PA and DA has been going on for the past three (3) years and has efficaciously provided the retirees with alternative source of income after they left the government service.
Dubbed “Transition Assistance Program”, the said activity held from March 17 to 19, endeavors to provide Army retirees with opportunities to identify options where they can still be productive after being detached from their regular work due to retirement.
In a press statement, Bordado stated that while the mandatory age for retirement for most government personnel is 65, for military personnel it is 56. The Philippine Army, as part of their continuing assistance to their personnel and officers has introduced their retirees to a smooth switch to civilian life via its “Transition Assistance Program.”
“Retiring personnel are made to attend a business/livelihood seminar and training where livelihood or business opportunities are presented. They might consider venturing into these endeavors after retiring from active service. This is also to provide them additional source of income rather than merely relying on their monthly pensions. Also, being engaged in a productive endeavour will boost their morale and give them a sense of pride as they mainstream into civilian life,” Bordado added.
This year, twenty-nine (29) retiring personnel from the PA attended the said activity held inside the military camp. The partakers were given a chance to have an actual visit to the facilities and projects inside the DA compound. They were also given an opportunity to experience hands-on learning on some of the topics that were discussed to them during the entire duration of the conference.
Talks on rice production, organic composting, goat production, native chicken production, grafting of fruit trees, cleft plant propagation, and mushroom production formed part of the discussion.
A simple graduation ceremony capped the confab which was graced by Col. Milfredo M. Melegrito, Chief of Staff of the 9th Infantry Division, Phil. Army. Melegrito lauded the graduates for never allowing old age and retirement to take away their productivity. (LSMacatangay-EBBordado DA-RAFIS 5/ PIAV/Camarines Sur)
