NAGA CITY, March 23 (PIA) --- The campaign that goes viral in the social media and has become the byword of every student and its stakeholders, successfully concluded today as winners formally received their awards during the simple yet significant ceremony held this morning at SM City Naga Activity Center, here.
This is the Students Today, Road Users Tomorrow (STRUT) campaign launched by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Bicol Regional Office under the stewardship of Regional Director Noreen San Luis-Lutey.
The competition’s category includes the Bicol “Selfie Challenge”, Bicol Youth Shout-Out and the Speak Up For Road Safety Campus Journalism Awards.
The Bicol Selfie Challenge is a photo competition that intends to encourage partakers to be an active user of Facebook as part of the social media promotion of LTO. It specifically targets young people who consistently use their Facebook accounts and adopting the trendy Selfie shots. The Selfie Challenge was further divided into sub categories: the Solo, Duo and the Groufie Challenge.
Andrew Y. Quides of Legazpi City Science High School in Legazpi City bagged the top prize under the Bicol Selfie Challenge- Solo Category. Rhea F. Pajares & Cyra de la Cruz of Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology in Naga City made it to the Duo “Selfie Challenge while Martina Louisees G. Serote, Ma. Paula Listanco, Roselle Lorilla, and Camille Apellado of Daraga National High School, Daraga, Albay got themselves P15,000.00, a certificate and a Rag Pet trophy.
The solo and duo winners received P10,000.00, a certificate and a Rag pet trophy.
The Bicol Shout-Out challenge on the other hand, is a video competition open to all high school and college students enrolled in any private or public school in Bicol, a Filipino and resident of the region. The competition also opened the said opportunities to the out-of-school youths who are not more than 25 years old and enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the Department of Education (DepEd).
The winners under this category are the students of Universidad de Santa Isabel - Pili Campus located in Pili, Camarines Sur. They are Julie Ciron, Joseph Christian E. Delmiguez, Angeluz Josephine E. Delmiguez and Ronald Angelo D. Ciron. They also received P15,000.00 in cash, certificate and a Rag pet trophy.
Believing that campus journalism would be a perfect avenue to propagate the said campaign, LTO also included the Speak Up for Road Safety Campus Journalism Awards. Campus writers are encouraged to tackle road safety in their papers. Write-ups should also contain the LTO’s campaign on road safety, including the agency’s current programs and its intent to mainstream gender concerns and gender sensitivity on the road.
Winners of the Speak Up for Road Safety Campus Journalism were also given due recognition. For Best Editorial, RNAFS Harvest of Ragay National Agricultural & Fisheries School in Ragay, Camarines Sur got the top plum with their article entitled "Highway Safety and Behaviour". For Best Feature Article, the entry entitled "Tinampo Harani sa Peligro" by Jessa Q. Olor also got the jurors’ nods. The article was published in the RAGAYON, community paper of Ragay National Agricultural & Fisheries School, Ragay, Camarines Sur.
"Seatbelt ay Palaging Gamitin Upang Byahe sa Kalye ay Di Malasin" by Sheila Mae Briones of The Herald from Oas Community College, Oas, Albay won the Best Opinion Article while the Best News Article goes to Joal C. Cocjin, SAVS official school website, San Andres Vocational School, San Andres, Catanduanes. The article bears the title "LTO Taps Schools for Road Safety Campaign."
Winners of the aforementioned categories brought home P5,000.00 each, a certificate and a Rag pet trophy.
LTO also gave special Awards for Editorial Cartoon. It goes to “The RNAFS Harvest”, of Ragay National Agricultural & Fisheries School, Ragay, Camarines Sur. STRUT LTO Bicol Road Safety Campaign Campus Publication of the Year was awarded to The Herald of Oas Comunity College, Oas, Albay. Both winners received P15,000.00 cash, a certificate and a Rag pet trophy.
STRUT is the brain child of LGU-Pili Public Information Officer Carlos Arejola. He coined the word to raise young people’s awareness on road safety, knocked on every school’s door to introduce this endeavor that he believes will save more lives on the road and eventually touched the heart of everyone who came to embrace STRUT as their own campaign.
