LEGAZPI CITY, Mar 23 (PIA) – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has featured Bicol’s best delicacies at the 12th Singapore Food and Beverage Fair slated March 19-22 at the Singapore Expo Hall.
DTI Bicol regional director Jocelyn Blanco led the region’s participation as component of its Food Business Development (BizDev) program noting that participation in the said international trade event brings the taste of Bicol not only to Singapore but Malaysia as well.
Jocely Berango, DTI Bicol information officer, said the program started in 2007 which primarily aims to boost sales of Pili Nut as Bicol’s flagship commodity but it has currently included promotion of other processed food products and beverage.
“The pili nut, touted as Bicol’s finest food gift to the world, thrives in an industry that pays homage to centuries-old practice of de-shelling nuts using bolo and wooden board or “pagtilad.” The government steadily supports the Pili industry to meet a rising global demand for innovative, new flavors and tastes,” Berango said.
The seven small and medium enterprise (SMEs) and leading manufacturers of pili nut products in the region exhibiting their best products in the said fair are Leslie Pili Products, Noveno’s Pilinut Candies, The R.A.I.N.S. Delicacies, Tia Berning Pili Candies, Antes Enterprises, Espeña Eco Farm Enterprises, and YML Health Food Products.
DTI Bicol regional director Jocelyn Berango headed the delegation noting that participation in the trade event will bring the taste of Bicol not only to Singapore but Malaysia as well.
Aside from various pili nut delicacies, other products exhibited made from the region’s leading produce are molido, coconut jam, taro chips, banana chips, ginger tea and other herbal teas and juice.
“Beyond Pili, Bicol is also home to a feast of flavors and food offerings delightful to foodies worldwide,” Berango furthered.
The DTI likewise enjoined Bicolanos in Singapore together with their friends and relatives to visit the fair to indulge and try newly developed food delights.
“This 4-day event is a “food paradise” that must be enjoyed and experienced, a taste of Bicol right in the heartland of Singapore,” Berango added.
The Philippine Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has given the Geographical Indication (GI) mark to pili nut grown in Bicol’s rich volcanic soil to highlight its outstanding quality and taste satisfying the discerning palate of every global consumer.
The GI mark is a globally recognized label remarkably representing the quality standard and unique origin of pili nut in the region. (MAL/SAA-PIA5/Albay)
