LEGAZPI CITY, Aug. 15 (PIA) – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Bicol will host the 2014 Southern Luzon Clusters Science and Technology (S&T) Fair and Exhibits (SLCSTFE) composed of the National Capital Region (NCR), Region III, CALABARZON (IV-A), MIMAROPA (IV-B) and Bicol.
Anchored on the theme, “Building Smarter MSMEs and Communities through Science, Technology and Innovation,” the fair will be held at the Ibalong Centrum for Recreation (ICR) this city from August 18 to 20 in partnership with the City Government of Legazpi.
“The fair will feature and highlight activities to show significant researches, technologies and products identifiable to the five regions of the cluster and aligned to the major thrusts or programs of DOST,” DOST Bicol Regional Director Tomas Briñas said in a release. Properly integrating science, technology and innovation with the globalization phenomenon is an essential step in achieving a “Smarter Philippines,” Briñas added.
Highlighting the commencement of the fair is the launching of Juan Time Is On Time and the unveiling of the Global Positioning System (GPS) Clock within the intersection of Quezon Avenue and Rizal Street this city between 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.
The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) will also install the GPS in nine major ports in Bicol namely, Legazpi, Tabaco and Pantao in Albay; Masbate; Bulan and Matnog, both in the province of Sorsogon; Virac and San Andres in Catanduanes and Pasacao in Camarines Sur, Briñas said.
Among the highlights of the event are Technology Exhibits, tour and visit of SETUP projects and firms in Albay; presentation of convergence programs of DOST Bicol to inform public and potential customers. Through lecture discussion and open forum, DOST V’s continued and strengthened initiatives and efforts in collaboration with other agencies such as the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Bicol University (BU), DOST Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) will be featured.
Star Communications will also present the GPS/PST clock features for the Juan Time is On Time advocacy with local government units, non-government organizations and private organizations in attendance.
SETUP cooperators will also be clustered based on focused industry to explore opportunities for business partnership and further S & T interventions. Display and Market Information Center’s (SDMIC) programs and services will also be presented together with updates on collaborative projects with other organizations.
A contest on disaster prevention and mitigation dubbed as Maging Wais, Iwas Sawi among students and professionals will be engaged to develop or upgrade their skills in the design of disaster preparedness or preventive technologies and other applications. The contest also aims to create greater awareness on disaster prevention and mitigation programs and initiatives and collaborative efforts among DOST, OCD, and other government and non-government agencies.
Outstanding scholars will be recognized during the Scholars’ Day on August 19 during which the DOST scholars all over the Bicol Region will gather to be updated on the current status of implementation of the scholarship program.
Visiting high school and college students in the fair will also have a chance to join the S & T Quiz on August 20.
