LEGAZPI CITY, Aug. 8 (PIA) – Department of Agriculture (DA) secretary Proceso Alcala leads yesterday the turn-over of over P5.6M worth rehabilitation assistance to farmers and other agri-stakeholders affected by typhoon Glenda in Albay.
“The initial P5.6M rehabilitation assistance is part of the quick response fund allocated by the DA and we will be increasing our assistance depending on the result of consultation to affected farmers and agri-stakeholders,” Alcala said.
He will also be meeting with local officials in the province to fast-track rehabilitation efforts.
The assistance program is a quick response effort of the DA to provide initial assistance consisting of agricultural inputs, farm machineries and equipment and other assistance needed by farmers and fisherfolk to Sorsogon, Albay and Camarines Sur, the three provinces mostly affected by the typhoon.
DA Bicol director Abelardo Bragas said distributed and turned-over to Albay are 1,000 bags of certified rice seeds, five units hand tractors, 9,000 packets assorted vegetable seeds, 9000 pieces sili seedlings, 185 bagshybrid corn seeds, 15 bags open pollinated variety corn seeds, 54 garden tools sers and 1,000 pieces laminated sacks or canvass.
Also raffled off to lucky farmer atendeed during the event are ten units hand tractors with trailers, ten carabaos as draft animals and three packets of sheep consisting of five females and one male sheep.
Bragas added that his office has submitted a comprehensive rehabilitation plan including the three other provinces of Bicol with corresponding budgetary requirement to the DA main office.
Albay governor Joey S. Salceda leads the local chief executives of the province in receiving the assistance.
On the same occasion, director Bragas and Tabaco mayor Maria Josefa Demetrio signed the Memorandum Agreement (MOA) for the construction of the Agri-Pinoy trading center in Tabaco city.
The ceremonial signing of the MOA for the implementation of the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) was also held with Secretary Alcala, Governor Salceda, Dir. Bragas and PRDP Luzon B project director Shandy Hubilla as signatories.
Municipal and city mayors, agriculturists, associations of farmers, irrigators and fisherfolks along with local industry boards, agriculture and fishery council officers and local media are also present during the said event.
The quick response effort of the DA in Bicol was first launched in Sorsogon last week also led by Alcala.
He will be launching the same event today at the DA regional office compound.
DA Bicol information officer Emily Bordado said estimated damage wrought by typhoon Glenda on agricultural sector is valued at P3.9B, the aggregate total for crops, livestock, agri-infrastructure, abaca, coconut and fisheries.
Some 80, 435 farmers and fishers are affected.
Production volume loss in metric tons for rice is 97,898; corn is 44,567; high value crops 40, 578 and abaca 3,039.
Some 53,863,899 coconut trees are also affected.
Camarines Sur has the biggest area and volume of crop damaged followed by Albay and Sorsogon.(MAL/SAA-PIA5/Albay)
