SORSOGON CITY, August 10, 2014 (PIA) – Bush fire incidents occurred in Sorsogon City and in Casiguran town during the past week until late last night caused local authorities and affected communities to be deliberately on guard.
According to Casiguran Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) head Louie Mendoza, at about 9:30 last night, bush fire blew up and intensified further in the upper part of Brgy. Inlagadian in Casiguran town.
“Help from barangay officials, firefighters from Juban Fire Station, and Philippine Army were extended to us but due to the dense forest and weedy path going to the area, we cancelled the operations last night and leave it for the next day,” said Mendoza.
Initial assessment of the Casiguran MDRRM Office as of August 10, 2014, bared that more or less 30 hectares of land in Brgy. Inlagadian were affected by the fire damaging cogon grasses, root crops and coconut trees.
Local officials remain on guard but are confident that it will not spread further as it was already contained.
“We believe fire would not flare up to any further extent especially that the area is bounded by a deep inland waterway. But the few smokes and still flickering fire in the area compels us not to be complacent and be continuously on guard, “said Mandoza.
Mendoza however clarified that they are still conducting an assessment and verification of bush fires in Brgy. Sta. Cruz and in Brgy. San Pascual. “Communication through cellphone and VHF radio remains to be inefficient due to existing power outage and toppled repeaters brought by typhoon Glenda."
Still according to Mendoza, the fire sites are in mountainous area and are far from communities, however, they have advised the public including the private owners to temporarily stop going to the area due to possibility of re-ignition of fire. Most of the area were awarded to Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries of the Department of Agrarian Reform through Certificate of Land Ownership Award (CLOA).
With the incidents of bush and forest fires happening in the region, local DRRMOs were already alerted while residents have been advised to be more vigilant and responsibly report immediately to authorities or to members of the DRRM Council any occurrence of bush or forest fire incidents.
Cause of fire in Casiguran is still unknown and extent of damage is yet to be determined.
Prior to the Casiguran bush fire, the same incident was also recorded in Sitio Tiagao, Magasang and Gajo in Brgy. Osiao and in Sitio Gayong in Brgy. Sto Nino, all in Bacon District, Sorsogon City last week.
Report from the Sorsogon City BFP Central Fire Station dated August 7, 2014, said that fire engulfed hectares of "talahib", cassava, young coconut trees, and other root crops which started about five days ago.
Bureau of Fire (BFP) Sorsogon City together with the personnel from the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and the Sorsogon City Emergency Response Team (SCERT) upon notice immediately responded to the said incident averting further damage in the area.
“Though cause of the fire remains to be under investigation, the team suspected slash-and-burn farming or kaingin as the reason behind the said occurrence,” City Fire Marshal Walter B. Marcial said.
Based form the report made by the BFP Sorsogon, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office Operation and Warning Division Chief Manuel Romeo L. Jayco recommended for a joint aerial assessment of the area.
Community ENR Officer Krisma Rodriguez of DENR Sorsogon who joined the aerial survey yesterday morning, Aug. 9, at the Bacon-Manito area said that per their ocular inspection, there was no longer visible huge smoke that can be seen from their vantage point although there were small sporadic sources of smoke that were observed as they approached Pocdol Range, Manito side.
“Our pilots found it difficult to directly fly over said Range as the wind direction wasn't in our favor,” she added.
The Joint aerial survey was conducted by the team of Phil. Air Force Tactical Operations Group (TOG) 5, Sorsogon PDRRMO, Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) 5 and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 5.
Meanwhile, it can be recalled that the DENR and PIA have combined effort through an intensified Climate Change Advocacy Campaign to raise public awareness on the serious effect of the climate change and of the global warming. Environment and weather experts say that global warming is increasing the frequency and severity of bushfires and will lead to increased days of extreme fire danger.
It is also a very timely call for the public to be more responsible in dealing with the environment and get rid of illegal forest activities. (AAN/BARecebido, PIA-5/Sorsogon)
