Typhoon brings initial P1B production loss in Bicol - DA

PILI, Camarines Sur, July 19 (PIA) --- The Department of Agriculture (DA) regional field unit in Bicol has recorded an initial P1 billion worth of production losses from the devastation of typhoon Glenda to the agricultural sector in the region destroying some 40,801.21 hectares of farms and affecting more than 82,850 farmers.

DA RFU public information officer Officer Emily Bordado said the typhoon totally or partially damaged agricultural lands planted with rice, corn and other high value crops as well as livestock and other agri-infrastructure that also suffered enormous damages.

Bordado said that the initial damage report was based on the data forwarded by different local government units, other agencies and offices in the field of agriculture, covering almost all six provinces of the Bicol region.

Among provinces, Camarines Sur recorded  an estimated production loss of P450,034,504 affecting some 16,747 famers consisting of 55,403.64 metric tons of rice.

Of the 17, 727.01 hectares areas affected, 6,112.97 hectares have a chance of recovery while 11,727.01 hectares were declared as no chance of regaining the commodity at all.

Albay’s rice lands covering 8,873 hectares were also widely affected by the torrential rains with estimated rice production loss pegged at P135,024,846 and affected 12,259 farmers.

Corn farmers in Camarines Sur suffered the most on their crops compared to their counterparts in neighbouring provinces that totalled to 4,791.71 hectares while Albay and Masbate’s corn plantations only covered 547 and 242.35 hectares, respectively.

High value crop farmers from Albay initially numbering to 20,250 were also affected with agricultural production loss amounting to P242,334,287.50 while livestock loss due to death of various farm animals was pegged at P4,470,290.00.

DA also initially recorded an estimated damage to agri-infrastructure amounting to P371,514.105.43 but only involving the agency’s infrastructure such as dryers, palay and animal shades, barns and office buildings. (MAL/LSM-PIA5/CamSur)
