Naga City joins celebration of Araw ng Kagitingan

BY: ANA-LIZA S. MACATANGAY

NAGA CITY, April 8 (PIA) ---  As the entire nation commemorates the heroism of our Filipino war fighters, the city government here has lined up various activities to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of Araw ng Kagitingan and Philippine Veteran’s week.

Mayor John Bongat of this city will grace the flag raising ceremony at the city hall compound with the members of the 9th Infantry Division Band of the Philippine Army to lead the singing of the Philippine national anthem.  It will be immediately followed by a wreath-laying ceremony to be attended by all the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

The wreath will be offered to the monument of the unknown soldiers inside the City Hall compound, aptly remembering their heroism in this year’s theme: “Balik –tanaw sa Sakripisyo ng Beterano, Gabay sa Landas ng Pagbabago”.

The Unified Troops of the Philippine National Police (PNP), including the men and women of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) will also give their respect through their hand salutes.

Expected to grace the said occasion is Hon. Salvador G. Cajot, Philippine Veterans Federation District Commander of Camarines Sur.  He will be joined by Bongat and Professor Danilo Madrid Gerona, a renowned Bicolano historian.

Every year, the city government celebrates Araw ng Kagitingan as their way of honoring our very own heroes’ sacrifices and their bravery as they fought for our freedom.

Bongat said that this is just a fitting tribute to the men and women who valiantly exchanged their lives just to defend our country’s honor.

The entire nation mourned the deaths of thousands of Filipinos who died during the historic Fall of Bataan when the Japanese invaded the Philippines. Mostly remembered is the Fall of Corregidor and the Death March in Bataan, which according to the historians and notable historic notes, is the most intense phase of the Japanese imperial invasion of the Philippines during the World War II.

Bongat and the entire City Council, under the headship of Vice Mayor Nelson Legacion, will see to it that this martyrdom will not be wasted and will always serve as an inspiration to the younger generation. (MAL/LSM-PIA5/Camarines Sur)
