VIRAC, Catanduanes, April 7 (PIA)- Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) conducted a Consumerism Caravan to increase public awareness on consumer's rigths protection on March 25, 2014 at Rhaj Inn.
According to DTI, provincial director Heginio Baldano, the activity is the first run of its Consumerism Caravan with the activity to be held in four more towns in the next three months.
Baldano stressed that Republic Act No. 7394 or “The Consumer Act of the Philippines” provides that it is the policy of the State to protect the interest of the consumer, promote his general welfare and to establish standards of conduct for business and industry.
Towards this end, the state shall implement measures to achieve the following objectives: a. protection against hazards to health and safety; b. protection against deceptive, unfair and unconscionable sales acts and practices; c. provision of information and education to facilitate sound choice and the proper exercise of rights by the consumer; d. provision of adequate rights and means of redress; and e. involvement of consumer representatives in the formulation of social and economic policies
Bugkos Catandungan NGO, members of the Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCCC), and Consumer Welfare Desk Officers (CWDOs) of local government units were the participants of the activity.
They were reoriented on the Consumer Act of the Philippines, updated on consumer guides and tips, and together discussed plans for the conduct of subsequent caravans.
Republic Act 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines took effect on July 15, 1992. It’s intended to protect the interests of the consumers, to promote their general welfare and to establish standards of conduct for business and industry.
Same caravan will be conducted in the municipalities of San Miguel, Bato, Viga and Panganiban. (MAL/EAB-PIA5/Catanduanes)
