Catanduanes kicks off observance of Rabies Awareness Month, pursues rabies-free province by 2015

VIRAC, Catanduanes, March 12(PIA) - Observance of the Rabies Awareness Month has kicked-off on March 7, renewing campaign on the prevention and control of rabies among animals and infection among residents.

The campaign stated off with a motorcade around downtown here followed by a Eucharistic celebration participated by the members of the Provincial Rabies Control Committee, including DepEd, PNP, PIA, Provincial Veterinary’s Office, CSU, Radyo ng Bayan, DILG and the Provincial Government of Catanduanes.

According to provincial veterinarian Dr. Jane C. Rubio, this year’s theme “Aso ay Alagaan at Pabakunahan upang Rabis ay Maiwasan” has been aptly chosen to promotes responsible pet ownership by encouraging dog owners to register and have their dogs vaccinated with anti-rabies.

The Provincial Veterinarioan Office spearheaded a seminar on Rabies Prevention and Control and Advocacy on Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO) and followed by rabies vaccination and castration for animals.

Rubio also disclosed that they will be tapping the local tri-media for more effective Information Education Campaign.

Catanduanes is pursuing a rabies-free province by 2015 stepping up measures to achieve such status by pasisng a local ordinance on the prevention and control of rabies; localized comprehensive rabies prevention/control and elimination program; rabies control measures in place, with quantifiable results; and human rabies control measures in place, with quantifiable results.

Requirements to be declared as rabies-free, explained Rubio, there should be no confirmed case of indigenously acquired infection by a lyssavirus by any person at anytime during the previous two (2) years through monthly zero-case reporting from the Municipal Health Office.

She added that there should be an adequate and functional surveillance system on rabies in accordance with the Philippines Integrated Disease Surveillance and Report System in the area.

Since May 2011, there was no reported rabies case in the province.
