VIRAC, Catanduanes, Feb. 2 (PIA) - The Palarong Bicol (regional games) 2014 started today parading the more than 6,000 athletes, coaches and government officials of the different delegations from the provinces and cities of the Bicol region.
Catanduanes Governor Araceli B. Wong said in her keynote message that this activity will not only bring pride to the provinces and cities represented by the athletes but as well as to the Bicolano people as a whole.
Wong likewise encouraged the participating athletes to give their best without sacrificing sportsmanship.
Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Catanduanes officer in charge Jose L. Doncillo emphasized the importance of the regional games, stressin that winning is significant but fair play and sportsmanship is what matters most.
The DepEd regional official also thanked the local officials of Catanduanes for hosting the Palarong Bikol for two-consecutive years.
"Such feat is a big challenge but it was made possible by the support of the provincial government and other individuals," he said.
Catanduanes also hosted Palarong Bicol 2013 which featured "Salubungan (Assemble)" for the commemoration of EDSA.
Delegations paraded along main thouroghfares of this town and proceeded to the Virac Athletics Complex, the main venue for the year’s games, for the formal opening program.
The opening ceremonies culminated with a grand fireworks display, release of balloons and field demonstration rendered by selected students of Catanduanes National High School and Catanduanes University Hablon Dawani.
The 13 delegations will vie for the medals of 17 sporting events as part Basic Education Curriculum of theDepEd.
Also present during the opening ceremonies were officials from the various provinces of Bicol, DepEd Divisions Superintendents, Governor Joey Salceda of Albay and Congressman Edcel Lagman, Jr. of the 1st Congressional District of Albay. (MAL/EAB-PIA5/Catanduanes)
