LEGAZPI CITY, Feb 5 (PIA) – The city government of Legazpi has declared today another 20 business establishments as certified 100% non-smoking establishments.
The recognition is given to establishments fully complying with the anti-smoking policies of the city and the provincial smoke-free ordinance of Albay.
Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal said he is proud of the support of business establishment owners to the implementation of the smoke-free ordinance citing its benefits to health and environment and other benefits enjoyed by the constituents especially now that the city is at the height of promoting fun and adventure.
Majority of the awardees are hotels and restaurants.
These include the Casablanca Suites, Hotel Casablanca, La Piazza Hotel, Legazpi Airport Hotel, Legazpi Airport Hotel, Alicia Hotel, Tyche Hotel and Restaurant, Hotel St. Ellis, Hotel Venezia, Villa Angelina Hotel, La Roca Veranda Suites and Oriental Hotel.
The restaurants are AVP Restaurant and Catering Services, Boklan, Golden Dragon, Small Talk, Waway’s and Four Seasons.
Also recognized are Innodata Knowledge Services, Inc and CPAC 1.
Dr. Fulbert Alec Gillego, City Health Office chief, reported that his office has conducted rounds of inspection in establishments within the city to check their compliance to the provisions of the city’s smoke free ordinance.
The provisions to be complied with are visible No Smoking signage within their respective premises, prohibition of indoor smoking for 100% smoke-free environment and active participation in the anti-smoking advocacy by urging customers to smoke in designated areas.
The award-giving team further evaluates qualified establishments.
Owners and operators of said establishments receive special certificate bearing the text “Certified 100% Smoke-Free (non-smoking establishment).
The certificate is conceptualized and produced by the ADD+VANTAGE Community Team Services together with the Smoke-Free Albay Network (SFAN) and Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
The owners in turn expressed delight and further support to said initiative
Rosal further disclosed that the smoke-free program of the city started with the implementation of Ordinance No. 0007-2009 or the revised smoke-free law authored by Councilor Rolly Rosal, enacted by the members of the Sangguniang Panlunsod and approved by former mayor Carmen Geraldine B. Rosal in 2009.
The city chief executive said the implementation of this ordinance was a shared responsibility of the Legazpi City Health Office (CHO) as the leading implementing office together with non-government organizations, religious organizations, schools, business establishments, academe and smoke-free ordinance law enforcers.
For three consecutive years from 2010 until 2013, the city government of Legazpi was awarded by the Department of Health as a model LGU in the entire country in recognition of its effective anti-cigarette smoking campaign.
It has been placed at the DOH's Hall of Famer in the prestigious Smoke Free Red Orchid Award during the annual Worldwide celebration of World No Tobacco Day on May 29, 2013 at the Philippine Trade and Training Center in Pasay City, Rosal added.
To sustain the implementation of the program, he vowed to put up more big billboards and video screens at the airport, seaport, markets, terminals and other public places and crowded areas of the city as part of the smoke-free campaign to inform the public about the ill effects of smoking and the penalties on smokers.
