Storm surge wipes out houses in coastal towns

BY: ANA-LIZA S. MACATANGAY

PILI, Camarines Sur, Nov.9 (PIA) ---  While tropical storm Yolanda howled and took its back to leave the province of Camarines Sur on the night of November 8, some 354 houses were destroyed and left a destructive image of smashed up houses in the towns of Presentacion, Sangay and San Jose, all in the coastal Partido area.

Hardest hit was the municipality of Presentacion where 12 barangays were affected. The storm surge also displaced 4,247 families who live near the sea shores and partially damaged 116 houses but rendered 134 dwellings beyond repair. Affected barangays include Bitaogan, Patrocinio, Liwacsa, Baligian, Bulalacao, Cagnipa, Lagha, Maangas, Bagong Sirang, Buenavista, Pili and Sta. Maria.

Barangay Patrocinio’s road is unpassable as of press time, due to a landslide brought by heavy rains.

Barangays Nato and Atulayan in Sangay were not spared from the 5 to 6 meters height of big waves when it also damaged 40 houses and displaced 3,624 families. The same catastrophic waves also hit 4 barangays of San Jose, namely; Adiagao, Sabang, Tagas and Manzana and affected 1,863 families.  It partially damaged 10 houses and totally devastated 21 dwellings.

Environment Disaster Management and Emergency Response Office (EDMERO) Chief and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) Secretariat head Luzena N. Bermeo said that Camarines Sur Governor Migz Villafuerte already instructed them to redirect their relief and emergency efforts in all the coastal towns affected by the storm surge.

“The governor has instructed us to immediately respond to the needs of the displaced families particularly in the town of Presentacion who suffered the wrath of TS Yolanda.  Actually, immediately after hearing the news, our team proceeded to the area but we were hampered by the landslide in Barangay Patrocinio. The road was unpassable and it would be too risky for us to continue so we decided to come back and try again on the next day,” Bermeo said in an interview.

At 12:00 noon this morning, three (3) teams composed of responders and medical team went back to Presentacion, bringing with them food packs for at least 3 days and bundles of basic medicines.

“As per instruction of Governor Migz, we have arranged a “transbordo” team or a group of people who will assist us in manually transferring the goods from the landslide area in Barangay Patrocinip until Barangag Bagong Sirang until it reached Presentacion,” Bermeo added.

Evacuees from surge areas who lost their homes are temporarily staying inside the Presentacion hospital while some lodged themselves inside the Aglipay Church while waiting for the government’s intervention.  Bermeo assured that the provincial government is now mapping out possible solutions to address these needs.
